家 [Jiā] Series - Meditations on Home

This series was my personal response to the COVID-19 quarantine. The studies are meditations on the Chinese character 家 [jiā / home], and its many combinations and meanings when forming other words. Literally, the word formation/combination expanded beyond 家, but are all related to humankind and the vast interconnection of society.

Meant to pay homage to the traditional ink on rice paper medium of Chinese brush paintings, each piece began with a Chinese word or phrase as a blessing. These characters set the energy of the piece, but frequently were buried under the paint. In some cases the character bleeds through or is on the surface. Created on canvas with acrylics make these truly a Hapa (half-half) artworks.
